Tasting Notes

A master estate, Fuligni likes to give traditional Brunello an international twist, and in so doing, they make fabulous wines that are often accessible earlier than some of their Brunello counterparts. Employing very low yields, hand-picking their grapes, and using casks as well as barriques in vinification, this estate makes outstanding wines. Made from 100% Sangiovese as decreed by the DOCG rules of the region, these Brunelli are made to be laid down and have a long maturation period. Riserva is only made in the best vintages and from the best fruit parcels. Deemed to be a four star vintage in Montalcino, Fuligni made no Riserva in 2008. This means all the fruit normally destined for the Riserva goes into the regular Brunello - which is sensational. For Fuligni this is quite a broad style, but is still beautifully elegant and has the trademark finesse we so love from this great estate. Intense notes of plum and cherry fruit and some leafy, tobacco spice, delicious! Drink now or as Roberto Fuligni remarked, this could be kept for another 8-10 years.

Critical Praise

"One of the clear highlights of the vintage, the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino emerges from the glass with black cherries, violets, cloves, menthol, licorice and tar. The 2008 stands out for its impeccable balance and layered, highly expressive personality. A translucent, mid-weight, silky finish is totally striking. Once again, Fuligni made one of the more refined wines of the village. In 2008 there is no Riserva. All the best of the lots made it into the straight bottling. If I had to bet on a 2008 Brunello that might surprise on the upside in a few years, Fuligni would be near or at the top of my list. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023+."
