Tasting Notes

This vineyard is situated on soil composed mainly of clay and chalk, locally referred to as tuffeau (Touraine’s local stone). It is out of this stone that Raffault’s underground wine cellars were dug during Roman times. Light, bright and slightly vegetative in their youth, these wines reveal their fullness after 5-7 years of cellaring.

"A tightly-wound Chinon with a glorious degree of florality. Pleasantly musky, peppery and juicy - what a delight to drink! This is textbook Chinon that is on the riper, fleshier side of the spectrum but still taught for any other cabernet franc producing region. Nervy with zip and fine tannic edginess. Generous aromatics showcase the most intriguing character of this complex and ageworthy grape variety. Best with food to settle the more intense structural elements."

"Loire Valley cabernet franc fans will find happiness in this bottle from Raffault, a textbook example with gravelly tannins and firm acids, yet with a certain raw elegance. Typical tart red fruit, violet and herbals flavours linger nicely. I'd suggest another couple of years in the cellar to polish the texture - there's no sign of evolution as yet so I suspect this will evolve quite slowly."
