Château La Grolet Cuvée Classique Rouge Côtes de Bourg (ORGANIC & BIODYNAMIC) 2021
Tasting NotesThe Hubert family own and farm two nearby vineyards, Château Peybonhomme-les-Tours in the Côtes de Blaye, and Château La Grolet to the south in the Côtes de Bourg. Both of these Right Bank Estates are farmed biodynamically. The Côtes de Bourg is a beautiful landscape of rolling hills that are sometimes referred to as the 'little Switzerland of the Gironde'. Here, the gravel-rich terroir makes for a more firmly structured red than its Côtes de Blaye sibling (Peybonhomme). Château La Grolet Cuvée Classique Rouge blends 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Malbec. The vines at Grolet are now approaching 50 years, and this wine was native fermented and aged in a mixture of concrete and wooden vessels (20%) before being bottled without fining or filtration, and minimum sulphur. This is a deep, savoury, authentic Bordeaux with dark cherry, blackberry, iodine, and wild rose filling a juicy, classically structured palate. Though drinking very well now, this will easily cellar over the next decade. |
Critical Praise"A merlot-dominated (70%) Right Bank blend grown and made biodynamically (certified Demeter), this is open and immediately engaging Bordeaux, featuring a wide range of ripe red and black fruit, plum and black cherry, resinous herbal character, dried mint, old wood spice, and more in a complex expression. The palate is wooly and grippy, with a genuine and honest feel, rustic in the best way, like freshly pressed grapes, fermented and aged, nothing less, nothing more. Acids are vibrant per the vintage, and length and depth are very good. This is a wine to enjoy relatively young, I'd say from now until about 2025. Tasted October 2020." - 90 points John Szabo, MS, WineAlign.com |
