Tasting Notes

Il Maggio Chianti Classico is produced by Piemaggio. The estate is located a Le Fioraie, a hamlet on the north-western side of the Castellina in Chianti territory in the heart of historical Chianti Classico. Piemaggio is the name of the farmhouse in the centre of the estate.

The painstaking work in the vinyards, the selection of the best grapes at harvest time, together with vinification and ageing techniques result in top-quality wines of great honesty.

Now moving into prime this pours fairly pale garnet-brick. It is slim yet well balanced with complex aromas of currants, leather, rosemary and wood spice. There is a firm, slightly tart acidity here with some tannin as well. It carries well with excellent length and some minerality. An authentic Chianti experience at prime!

Piemaggio's 2019 "Il Maggio" offers a bright and fresh, if very ripe, red fruit-focused profile, succulent and juicy, vigorous but with fine-grained tannins, product of these relatively high elevation vineyards at just over 400 meters on the soil type known as "Formazione di Sillano", a type of limey marl prevalent in the Castellina in Chianti area. It's drinking beautifully now on the fruit, though will surely hold and turn more savoury over the next 2-3 years. Well-made, well balanced, delicious. Tasted August 2023.
