Tasting Notes

EL ESCOCES VOLANTE (The Flying Scot), Norrel Robertson MW, touched down with his family in Spain in 2003 and released his first wine in 2004 (Manga del Brujo). Norrel has been making wine in Spain for over 14 years and is currently one of the few Master of Wines living in Spain. He was born and raised in Scotland and, after graduating from Aberdeen University with a MA Honours degree in Politics and International Relations, has worked in the wine industry for the last 25 years, starting in sales before moving on to buying and product development.

Norrel now produces many award winning wines made from very specially selected vineyards at high altitude in Aragon, Spain. He also has winemaking projects in Murcia, Valencia and Galicia. His own wines are sold in over 20 markets. He consults for many high profile wineries in Spain and also to winery clients in Chile and South Africa.

Papa Luna is a blend of 75% Old Vine Garnacha, 20% Syrah and 5% Mazuelo from high-altitude vineyards in D.O. Calatayud. Careful fermentation along with low yields and natural concentration have produced a full bodied, distinctive Rhône-style blend which marries the Old and New Worlds in terms of style but with a slant towards a meatier, more structured wine. The key to this wine is the long time spent working with the fine lees to obtain length and complexity.

Deep purple colour with a ruby red rim. Pronounced aromas of black fruits, cracked pepper, smoke and toast. Full-bodied with well-balanced tannins. The palate displays dense black fruits, cherries with a long smoky/toast finish. Mineral and complex.

A great wine to drink with classic game dishes such as venison and wild boar. It also pairs well with punchy dishes such as ragout and spicy tomato-based recipes.
