Tasting Notes

Varietals: 85% Sangiovese (Morellino clone), 5% Ciliegiolo, 4% Alicante sapling, 3% Colorino & 3% Syrah.

Alcohol: 14.5%

The grapes for this wine were organically grown in high density vineyards (6,700 vines/ha) and hand harvested. Fermentation is in concrete tanks and small wooden vats, with native yeasts. Long skin maceration of 15-20 days, at 27-29C, with frequent manual délestage (rack and return) and punchdowns. 75% matured for 12 months in small botte (25hl), and 25% in 2nd and 3rd use barrels and new tonneaux. Low sulphur added.

Deep ruby. Highly aromatic nose of bing cherry, caramel, strawberry jam, red licorice and burnt toast. High-toned and expressive. Dry, medium to full bodied, rich, viscous and round. Balanced alcohol and acid with red currant, salty, saline flavours and chalky tannins. A bit of warmth carries through on a long finish.

Critical Praise

Owned by Simone Castelli, Podere 414 is a certified organic estate with 13ha of vines, situated in western Tuscany, straddling a river near the town of Scansano. From the region's very stony soils, this Morellino (Sangiovese), is splashed with Colorino, Ciliegiolo, Alicante, and Syrah. Each variety is vinified separately, before the blend goes into two year old barriques for one year, followed by additional bottle age prior to release. Dried violets, rose petals, Tuscan garrigue, dark earth entice into this full-bodied red, one layered with lusty, grippy blackberry, dark cherry, and blueberry notes. Tannins are ample, fine, and sticky, housing a plush palate bedded with stones. There's a lovely rise of acidity here that lifts the heft. Drinking beautifully now, especially with truffled risotto, or wild boar.
